Grand Performances Seeks Alcohol License

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES - Organizers of the free summer concert series Grand Performances are looking to secure a license needed to allow alcohol consumption at the outdoor events. In the meantime, the concerts remain booze-free.

In recent years, Grand Performances audiences have habitually brought their own wine and beer to the concerts at Cal Plaza. Organizers were forced to sing a stricter tune to the BYOB crowd three weeks ago, after officials with the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control ordered a stop to the practice.

Organizers are now in the process of preparing an application for a license that would allow onsite consumption, said Michael Alexander, Grand Performances executive director.

Before submitting the request, Alexander said he’s meeting with ABC officials and reps from the vice unit at LAPD’s Central Division. It is common for the LAPD to recommend a slate of conditions for approval of special event alcohol licenses, said Will Salao, Los Angeles district administrator for the ABC.

One of those suggested conditions will likely be that the Grand Performances venue, The Cal Plaza Watercourt, be segmented in a way that isolates a drinking area for people 21 and older, said Central Area Captain Horace Frank.

“You can’t have kids mixing in the same area where there’s all kinds of alcohol,” Frank said.

Alexander said he is working on a short-term solution that would establish special drinking areas, where attendees could consume alcohol that they brought to the event. Eventually, he said he hopes to find a way to maintain the current layout. He cited other venues where BYOB is tolerated, without 21-plus zones.

“My goal in the long term is to have the same kind of relationship with our audience that fans at Dodger Stadium have and fans at the Hollywood Bowl have,” Alexander said.
