WESTWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A man was killed when he lost control of his bicycle and crashed into a wall on the UCLA campus Friday night.
Jerico Culata, 18, was participating in the Critical Mass ride when his bike slammed into a masonry wall shortly before 10 p.m., police said.
He reportedly took a downhill curve too wide and lost control, according to authorities.
Culata was taken to the UCLA Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The Critical Mass cycling event in San Diego also left a police offer injured when a cyclist threw a screwdriver at his head, police said.
Authorities say run-ins with the police during Critical Mass rides are not uncommon.
Critical Mass cycling events are typically held in over 300 cities worldwide on the last Friday of every month.
