Pool Light Suspected Of Severely Shocking Girl, 15

GARDEN GROVE (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a 15-year-old girl is expected to make a full recovery after being shocked by electricity while swimming in her family’s pool.

Garden Grove police and firefighters were dispatched to the 11400 block of Ranier Court Saturday at about noon for a “possible electrocution.” When officers arrived, they found the girl, who had already been pulled from the pool by her father, lying face up on the pool deck, pale, unresponsive, without a pulse and not breathing, according to Garden Grove police spokesman Lt. Jeff Nightengale.

Family members told police that two sisters had jumped into the pool. The girl had jumped into the deep end and called to her 23-year-old sister.

The woman saw her sister floating face up, but was unresponsive and not moving, police said. When she tried to swim to her younger sister, her legs and arms began to go numb, the effects of electricity, according to Lt. Nightengale.

The woman called to her father and he pulled her out of the pool. The father then turned off all electricity to the pull by shutting off the circuit breaker.

The father pulled his younger daughter, who was now floating face down and still unresponsive, out the pool and began CPR until officers arrived.

Officers performed CPR on the girl. When paramedics arrived, they took over CPR and were able to restore her breathing and pulse. After shocking her with a defibrillator, the girl was taken to UCI Medical Center, where she was stabilized and remained under observation. Doctors believe she will make a full recovery, police said.

An investigation is ongoing into what may have caused the electricity in the pool, but a faulty pool light is suspected.
