RIALTO (CBSLA.com) — A 22-year-old man dangled from an overpass sign on the 210 freeway in Rialto on Sunday –and a videographer caught it all on tape.
Police said they saw the offender walking near an eastbound on-ramp around 3 p.m.
When they tried to make contact with the man, he ran across eight lanes of traffic.
He then jumped over a fence onto a “Sierra Ave.” freeway sign, where he climbed on the ledge and swung back and forth on the base of the sign.
At one point, he was hanging upside down.
Mike Powell caught the incident on his camera after hearing about it on a police scanner.
“He would sit down. He would get up and pace back and forth,” he said.
The incident caused traffic to be backed up for miles.
Fire officials brought in an air cushion, but before they could pump it up, the man let go of the sign, hit the ground, and took off.
A CHP officer finally used a Taser to subdue and arrest the suspect.
“Without having to use deadly force, so we can get the pedestrian into custody for the safety of him and traffic,” said Sgt. Edward Reyes.
The man is being held at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for a mental evaluation.
Police are still trying to figure out if he had drugs in his system.
