SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — One suspect is in custody and police are searching for another gunman they say shot up a South Los Angeles home that was filled with kids Saturday evening.
Three people were shot, one fatally. A 9-year-old boy was also struck.
The shooting occurred last night at the Avalon Gardens apartment complex just south of Manchester Avenue.
CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Jeff Nguyen spoke to the 9-year-old victim’s family on Sunday.
Says Destiny Vasquez, 12, “I feel sad because they’re shooting over here. Why would they do that?”
For Vasquez, her home will always be a reminder of where her brother, father and uncle were shot.
Her brother, the 9-year-old, was shot in the hip just after midnight. Alberto Vasquez’ family was having a get together in front of the home in South LA.
Many family members spoke to Nguyen, but many also did not want their faces shown.
The victim’s aunt said, “We was having a barbeque. They just come out here. They didn’t say anything. They just come out shooting.”
People who were gathered for the get together told Nguyen, two men walked out of a nearby alley and just started shooting. The family members ran inside.
Witnesses say one of the shooters was so bold, he ran into the house after the group and continued firing.
Said one witness, witness “It’s crazy out here. We can’t even be in the house. We’re not safe in our own house.”
The gunfire struck and killed 37-year old De Edmond Brown.
His family said he once had ties to a gang but no more. His girlfriend was 5 months pregnant.
Alberto Vasquez was also hit. He was treated at a hospital and released.
A bullet also grazed his father. In the meantime – Destiny Vasquez is left to wonder why anyone would shoot at a 9 year old.
She says, “Those people are … they’re just being mean. They’re probably hating on us.
Witnesses say one of the gunman was shot in the leg by the other shooter during the attack.
He later went to a hospital where police arrested him.
