Search Continues For Man Accused Of Firing At Driver Following Fatal Accident

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The search was under way Sunday for a shooter who authorities say fired shots at a driver following a fatal accident in South Los Angeles.

The accident on Western Avenue just south of 108th Street claimed the life of 28-year-old Alexis Brooks. It happened just after 9 p.m. Saturday, according to deputies.

About that time, someone started shooting at the driver, who according to Lt. Milton Murphy, drove home and reported the accident.

The driver is identified as 37-year-old Keetha Knox.

“She is not under arrest, and this is not considered a hit-and-run at this point,” Murphy said, who added that witnesses corroborated what happened.

Brooks, the mother of three young children, was declared dead at the scene.

A description of the gunman was unavailable.

Murphy said the California Highway Patrol is aiding in the investigation of what he called a “highly unusual incident.”

Sunday evening, CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Amanda Burden spoke with Floria Gilchrist, the deceased’s mother. “My son’s girlfriend called me and told me Alexis got hit by a car. So I put my clothes on and came over here. But she was already dead, they had the sheet on her already.”

Adds Gilchrist, “I would always think I would go before any of my children,” she said, choking back tears. “So you know it’s a real bad feeling.”
